Cosmetics With Dangerous Chemicals
For years women have trusted cosmetic companies to help them achieve a more glamorous, or, in some cases, a more natural look. But the fact of the matter is, some of those products contain chemicals that the companies know are linked to cancer.
L’Oreal
One company whose brand has been built on the concept of worldwide beauty, L’Oreal, offers a litany of products that contain these dangerous chemicals, including items like nail polish, anti-aging products, eye make-up, and even children’s shampoo. As the largest brand of beauty products in the world—worth nearly $15 billion–the number of people impacted by these carcinogens is countless. Maybelline and Garnier are both branches of L’Oreal and have carcinogens listed right on their labels in many products.
What Carcinogens are Present?
The list of dangerous ingredients is pretty long—and most of them are chemicals that the average consumer has never heard of or has no clue of the potential impacts. Just a handful of popular products and their carcinogens include:
- Nail Polishes (L’Oreal Colour Riche/Maybelline Color Show): Benzophenone;
- Eyeliner (L’Oreal): Carbon black;
- Eye Shadow (L’Oreal): Imidazolidinyl urea;
- Mascara (Great Lash by Maybelline): Quaternium-15;
- Blush (Maybelline): Inhalable Titanium dioxide;
- Anti-Aging Products (Garnier): Polyacrylamide;
- Kids’ Shampoo (L’Oreal): DMDM hydantoin.
How is This Legal?
Unfortunately, the federal laws designed to regulate cosmetics safety are weak and outdated, meaning companies have only their own moral compass and their bottom line to guide them when choosing ingredients to use in their products. While you’d think that the government would ban the use of carcinogens in cosmetics, or, at the very least, restrict the use of them, it simply has not occurred in the U.S.
Hair Relaxers
Another cosmetic product marketed toward Black men and women is chemical hair relaxers. L’Oreal and Revlon both have products on the market that contain formaldehyde and have been linked to prostate, ovarian, and breast cancers, among others. In fact, the risk for cancer escalates by over 30 percent for individuals who regularly use these products. Hair dye, too, has been connected with these cancers, with Black women who dye their hair every couple of months facing a 60 percent higher risk of developing breast cancer due to the ingredients in darker dyeing formulas.
Alternatives
Many who are concerned about the ingredients in popular cosmetics brands are switching to natural cosmetics. That business has seen huge growth, becoming a $30 billion industry in recent years.
