Florida Construction Worker Injured in Hit-and-Run Crash

A construction worker suffered some serious injuries after a vehicle struck him on the eastbound section of Interstate 4 in Seminole County on Tuesday, March 3. According to Florida Highway Patrol officers, the driver then fled the scene of the accident. Officers are still searching for the driver.

The crash didn’t occur precisely at the location where the I-4 Ultimate construction project has been in progress, but it still raises plenty of concern about safety for the workers in the area. The victim, a 23-year-old man who was an employee of Oglseby Construction, Inc., was striping pavement along the section of the highway within a lane closure at the time of the crash, according to his coworkers. The accident occurred at approximately 1:45 a.m. near the Winter Springs and Longwood exit. He was immediately taken to the hospital and was listed as being in serious condition.

The Ultimate project is a $3.2 million paving effort along I-4 that has been in progress since August and will continue in stages over the next six years. There is plenty of warning for vehicles entering areas where construction is happening, with signs, flashing lights, reflective vests on all workers and cones along the road.

Law enforcement officials say the hit-and-run vehicle was a Chevrolet Silverado that should be missing reflectors and a right-side mirror.

Committing a hit-and-run is a felony in Florida, so the driver of the vehicle may face both criminal and civil penalties if caught.
