Sideswipe Accidents

Sideswipe

The crash was horrendous. As two vehicles headed into a curve on I-295, they collided, sending one vehicle to the left into the median, where it flipped over, causing only minor injuries.  Tragically, the driver of the other vehicle veered to the right, where it rammed into the guardrail and then careened down the embankment, bursting into flames and killing the driver. It was one of thousands of fatal traffic accidents that occur every year in Florida.

Causes of Sideswipe Accidents

Although sideswipe collisions can be minor incidents that result in only property damage, they can clearly be catastrophic incidents, as well. What’s at the root of these sometimes-deadly collisions?

  • Drivers fail to check their blind spot before attempting to change lanes.
  • Distracted drivers swerve out of their lanes while texting, changing radio stations, talking to passengers, disciplining pets or kids, addressing personal hygiene issues, and so forth.
  • Fatigued drivers drift across lanes instead of pulling over to catch some Z’s.
  • Incapacitated drivers who have overindulged alcohol or drugs lose control of their vehicles after misjudging the distance between other motorists or simply being unable to make reasonable judgments on the road.
  • Merging drivers neglect to yield the right of way as a result of aggressive driving, inattention, or lack of awareness of other motorists on the road.
  • Drivers experiencing road-rage engage in erratic driving maneuvers and intimidate other drivers, sometimes even forcibly running them off the road.

Typical Injuries in Sideswipe Incidents

Certainly, there’s no argument as to the potential danger associated with sideswipe accidents.  While such incidents could definitely lead to fatalities, they all too often result in other devastating injuries including:

  • Broken bones and other long-term orthopedic issues;
  • Spinal cord and back injuries that could ultimately mean chronic pain, mobility issues, or even paralysis;
  • Traumatic brain injuries, resulting in cognitive, emotional, and physical impairments;
  • Amputations and/or crushed limbs as a result of one being pinned under or within a vehicle;
  • Painful and disfiguring burns.

If You are in a Sideswipe Accident

If you are involved in this type of accident, the first thing you should do is call 911, whether or not there are obvious injuries of a serious nature. It’s entirely possible that, in your adrenaline-induced state, you or others have sustained grave injuries of which you’re not currently aware. Let the paramedics check you out and, if they suggest taking an ambulance to the ER, do it.
