Speeding is Dangerous

SpeedingCar

A man is dead after the truck he was driving smashed into the rear end of a dump truck that was slowing down ahead of him on Jones Avenue.  The pickup had just passed another vehicle on the road and was driving above the posted speed limit at the time of the crash.

Speeding Dangers

Speeding is dangerous for the speeder, of course, but also for everyone else in their wake. 2022 saw well over 12,000 fatalities related to driving over the posted speed limits. In fact, speeding was a factor in about 30 percent of all traffic deaths over the past 20 years. To be clear, speeding can be an issue even if driving at posted limits if the conditions don’t warrant it. The problem is that speeding is often not an isolated issue.  It is frequently combined with other reckless actions, resulting in an array of consequences.  Those consequences include a greater chance of the following:

  • Losing control of the vehicle;
  • Needing more distance to complete a stop;
  • Greater damage to property;
  • More severe injuries to individuals.

Why is Speeding so Rampant?

Aggressive driving comes in many forms, one of which is speeding.  It’s something people of all stripes do, buy why? The reasons are as varied as the people who speed:

  • Congested traffic: People get frustrated when they can’t get where they want to go. They wind up meandering through traffic at increased speeds.
  • Running behind schedule: With so many responsibilities and appointments these days, people tend to be running late all too often. They view speeding as a way to cut a few seconds off of a busy day.
  • They’re anonymous: Drivers often feel detached from the world, hidden behind their windshield, mostly unseen. It makes a little lawlessness easy.
  • Pure disregard for anyone else: Those who frequently drive aggressively just don’t consider the harm they may impose on others. They are just unencumbered by thoughts of responsibility toward others.

When You Encounter an Aggressive Speeder

 We all encounter drivers who speed. How should we react? The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has this advice:

  • Let drivers pass if they’re tailgating, even if you’re in the left lane.
  • Give speeders all the space they need. If they lose control, you don’t want to be anywhere near them.
  • Call 911 if things get really dangerous or you think there is an impending risk.

If You’re Harmed by a Speeding Vehicle

We know that speeding can frequently result in accidents that impact innocents.  If you or a loved one is seriously injured or killed due to the actions of a reckless driver who sped, you may be entitled to damages to address medical bills, funeral costs, lost wages, and more.  To discuss your situation, schedule a confidential consultation with the empathetic, yet aggressive Kissimmee car accident attorneys at Salazar & Kelly Law Group office today.
